Hand pies are the perfect desserts for parties. They are literally pies for your hands! You can hold as many pies as you have hands, whether that is two, five or eight – if you’re an octopus. Hand pies don’t judge but your house guests do. These hand pies are just the perfect dessert for them. Nicole first came across hand pies about three years ago. She saw some and she just had to have them. This was about the time when her sister was getting married and of course they ended up at the bridal shower. We’ve had many hand pies since. The great thing about when Nicole gets on a kick like that is that I get to eat all the ones that don’t make the cut.
For these pies, we were trying to figure out a good holiday filling that’s somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The fruits that first came to mind were cranberry and apples. This conversation also happened right after we ate some Thanksgiving leftovers doused with cranberry sauce, before diving into my mothers apple pie.
Cranberries and apples by themselves are a great combo, but they can take a little spice due to their sweetness. This is why the intense flavor of cinnamon works so well. We wanted something else to spice up these pies other then the generic pumpkin spice (Cinnamon, clove and ginger). After a rummage through our spice cabinet, we landed on allspice and figured why not try it out. The results we unimaginable and we were very pleased with how they turned out. A few added last minute additions were the glaze and the powdered sugar to make it look like snow.
Enjoy as many pies as you can hold in your hands. Did I mention the little extra bonus? You can eat them with no utensils. The best news for all those who do the dishes by hand, like us.
Thanks for stopping by and as always enjoy!
